Depression is not typically beaten simply by pure willpower, but there are things that you can do to help gain control:
- Begin by setting small, achievable goals
- Surround yourself with supportive relationships
- Lead a healthy lifestyle
- Pay attention and learn about what triggers your emotions
- Do not be afraid to ask for help
While learning to gain control of your own life with these strategies, do not be afraid to ask for medical help. Diagnosis will begin with a physical exam by a doctor since many illnesses and medicines can lead to such symptoms. If physical causes are ruled out, then your doctor may refer you to a mental health specialist. They will determine the best treatment path for your situation whether it is antidepressants, psychotherapy, or a combination of both.
There are many antidepressants from different categories such as tricyclics, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI’s), serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI’s), and serotonin/norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRI’s). Some of these commonly prescribed antidepressants include Lexapro, Effexor, Cymbalta, Zoloft, Paxil, and Prozac. For extreme depression in people who cannot take antidepressants, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is another treatment option.
